As we arrived on the sand patch I noticed fresh pug marks on the road and managed to locate the leopard seated on a small patch of sand about 40 meters off the road. It was a mature male leopard but was unfortunately covered by the branches of a “Kora Kaha” bush. As auto focus could not be used I switched on to manual focus and waited for the breeze to move the branches and managed to get a few images to study its spot pattern. Having studied the images later I realized that this not a leopard in my database. Thus it was my first sighting of this animal and I estimated its age to be around 7 years. I named it Down Hall Pitiya Male 1 (DHPM 1). (with guide Tissa Ratnayake)
