Walas Wala Female 2 - WWF 2

Locations of sightings

Walas Wala, Sudu Muwa Wala, Borupan Junction

First Sighting

12th October 2013 5.05pm.

  • 30th August 2014 at 2.35pm 3 Leopards, (mother and two cubs) Walas Wala Female 2 (WWF 2), Walas Wala Male 2 (WWMC 2) and Walas Wala Female 3 ( WWFC 3) crossed the road towards Sudu Muwa Wala between Borupan junction and Walas Wala. N 08.41602, E 080.02642.
  • Even though I photographed these two cubs at Walas Wala on the 19th of July 2014 and yesterday morning I had no knowledge of the identity of their mother until this sighting. Having photographed them together I was able to identify the adult female as the Walas Wala Female 2 (WWF 2) that I had photographed at Walas Wala on 12th October 2013. The three leopards having crossed the main road crossed the Sudu Muwa Wala road and moved in to the forest. They were not seen thereafter. (with guide Thisara)

  • 10th August 2014 at 2.56 p.m : WWF 2, at Sudu Muwa Wala. N08.41041, E080.02647.
  • Having arrived at the waterhole, the cautious female leopard remained in the bush without breaking cover. I only managed to get a few record photos. Having examined its markings I identified it as WWF 2. After a few minutes of observing the vehicles parked on the road and quite visibly being disturbed by the voices emanating from these vehicles, much to my annoyance, the leopard walked back into the forest without coming out to drink. • 12th October 2013 5.05pm while watching BWMC 1 on the bund another female leopard was spotted at the right hand side of the “wala”. N 8.414150, E 80.031050
It was quite shy and did not move out in to the open. I managed to get a few shots of this leopard. This is my first sighting of this leopard and I named it Walas Wala Female 2 (WWF 2).
  • 5.17pm BWMC 1 stood up and walked towards WWF 2 and lied down close to it. The actions of the young leopard of keeping its head low and and lying down with its head on the ground ect indicated that it was quite submissive towards WWF 2. Even though the two leopards were close to the each other the second leopard did not move in to the open.
  • 5.35pm while watching the two leopards at Walas Wala another leopard walked from the Ibba Wala direction along the road towards Walas Wala but entered the forest. I was not able to photograph or identify this leopard. The excitement of the people in the jeeps parked behind me resulted in WWF 2 quickly moving in to the forest. ( With guide podi Danushka)
