This is a species, which is native to China, Japan, Indian subcontinent, Thailand Java and east to the small islands in the Western Pacific ocean known as Micronesia.

This is a species that I have observed in grasslands, Patna’s, Savannah Forests and open localities in forests from sea level to the lower hills. It is common in Nilgala.

In Ayurveda medicine the tuber of this species is considered a potent aphrodisiac. It is also known to be an adaptogen, Immunostimulant, Hepatoprotective, antioxidant with qualities of anti-cancer and anti –diabetic.

In Wilpattu this species can be found in most open places but I have observed the flowers only during the month of December. Borupan Wila and Manikkapola Uttu are two localities where these flowers can be observed during the flowering season.
