This is a rare winter migrant to the dry lowlands. This Stint breeds in the Arctic region of northern Europe and Asia. During winter this small wader visits freshwater sites in tropical Africa, the Indian Subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (IUCN Red List).

This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

This species is usually seen in inland fresh water marshy habitats including paddy fields. I have seen it at Bundala, Thalangama, Mannar and Jaffna Pennisula.

On the 23rd of March 2018 I was thrilled to observe one bird of this species at Kaali Villu.
