This is an endemic sub species. It is found through out the country except for the highest hills. Other than in Sri Lanka this species is also found in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Iran Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkmens tine and Vietnam.

This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

This is the second longest snake species in the country second only to the Indian Rock Python. Even though it is non- venomous if handled it can bite quite viciously. It is quite common and I have seen it through out the country in wilderness areas as well as towns. It is still common even in the city of Colombo and most residents welcome them as they keep the rodent populations under control. It common in the north as well as the south. I have seen them even at the top of Gawarathenna Mountain.

This is a common species in Wilpattu and I have seen them regularly during the game drives.
