Pukkulama Tank – N 08.55981, E 079.92290

In January 2014 I visited Pukkulama which is a remote fishing settlement found towards the northwestern border of the park. The Pukkulama tank holds fresh water and is regulerly visited by the fisher folk. Despite Pukkulama being within the park boundaries and often being referred to as a location where fisher folk put up seasonal temporary sheltors I observed many permanent structirers being built in the visinity.

Pukkulama is considered a part of the famous cluster of ancient burial grounds in this region, most notably the nearby Pomparippu Ancient Burial site.

The ancient urn burial site at Pukkulama is an important Proto-historic / early Iron Age archaeological site.

To reach Pukkulama one needs to take the road from Eluwankulama to Mollikulama and take the road to the left about 3 km before reaching Mollikulama.

I observed the broken lieces of pottery fresh pug marks of a female leopard and a cub on the sandy road to Pukkulama.
