This is a very common species found throughout the dry zone. It is common throughout tropical Asia, Africa and Australia.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).

This plant is seen in locations such as paddy fields, ditches, moist tank beds and open waterlogged grass fields. The leaves are cooked and consumed as a vegetable. In traditional medicine the tender shoot is rubbed on gums to relieve pain. Oil in which this plant is boiled is sued to apply on the body to bring down fever.

In Wilpattu this is a very common species on the edges of water bodies. I have seen this species flowering at many locations throughout the year.
