This is the only Exacum species to be found in the dry lowlands of the country. Other than in Sri Lanka this species is only found in India.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Vulnerable (National Red List 2012).

This is a species protected under schedule VIII read with section 42 of the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

Some of the most strikingly coloureful wild flowers of Sri Lanka are produced by plants, which belong to the Exacum genus. The beautiful Blue Exacum Exacum trinervium, of which many sub species have been recognized, is found in the montane zone and wet zone areas of the country.

The Northern Exacum is found in damp and shady locations of the Northwestern and Northeastern forested areas of the country.

This is a rare species in Wilpattu. I have seen it flowering in January and February close to Sudu Muwa Wala..
