I have seen this bird in suitable habitat through out the dry lowlands. It is equally common in the wet zone and the dry zone. It is a common bird in the north and is seen in large numbers in the Mannar and Jaffna peninsula. I have not seen it so far in the higher hills but up to about 400 meters. It is a common bird in most paddy fields.

This is a very common bird in Wilpattu. A few individuals are invariably present in every water body.
