This is a bulbous herb found in wet places such as swamps and riverbanks in peninsular India and China.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).

This is a common species that I have observed at many localities close to water in the low country dry zone. It is quite common after the rains in the North-central province. The flowers of this species, which bloom in the evenings, carry a very pleasant fragrance. Studies carried out in India have revealed that the ethyl acetate extract of this plant carries significant anti-inflammatory capabilities.

This is a wide spread species in Wilpattu. I have observed these flowers in November and February in localities such as Kumubuk Wila, Maradanmaduwa and Tala Wila.
