This is a species endemic to the country. Except in the north these geckos are found through out the country up to an altitude of about 1700 meters in the hills. As at 2012 Sri Lankan list of geckos consist of 43 species with 33 being considered as endemic. There are 10 species of geckos belonging to the genus  Hemidactylus of which three, including the present species, are considered endemic.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as “Least Concerned” (National Red List 2012).

This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

I have seen this species at many locations in the country including Yala, Kumana, Udawalawa and Lunugamvehera National Parks. I have not observed it in the Mannar Island or the Jaffna Peninsular.

This is a nocturnal species that can be commonly seen in houses close to forested areas.

In Wilpattu I have seen them at Hunuwilagama, Panikkar Villu and at Tala Wila.
