This is a common species found in the wet and dry lowlands up to an altitude of about 750 meters. Other than in Sri Lanka it is found in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).

This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

These frogs prefer still water ponds with a lot of water plants and are seldom found in fast flowing water ways. I have seen them through out the lowlands including the Mannar Island. During their juvenile stage these frogs feed on insects and invertebrates but the adults are known to feed mainly on plant material.

This is a common species in Wilpattu and can be seen at all the fresh water bodies with water plants, such as Mila Wala, Kattarambu Villu and Kumutu Wila.
