This is a migrant species mostly to the northern parts of the country. Occasionally a few birds can be seen in the southern parts of the country as well. The Common Teal breeds in temperate Eurasia and migrates south during winter.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (IUCN Red List).

This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

I have seen this species in Mannar and Jaffna on each of my visits during the season. In the south I have seen two birds once in December 2012 at Yala National Park.

I have visited Wilpattu every month since 2012 but never observed this species. In January 2017 a number of these birds were seen at Kaya Motte and again at Panikkar Villu. However no birds were seen in the following season.
