This is a very common species that is found close to water bodies and wetlands in all the tropical parts of the world. It has also been introduced to United States and is now common in localities such as Florida.

In Malaysia the leaves of this species is widely used for poulticing sores and crushed leaves and stems are used to treat irregular menstruation.

I have observed this species up to an altitude of about 1000 meters. It is usually found in damp shady places near water such as open swamps and marshes.

In Wilpattu this is a common species in suitable habitat throughout the park.
