This is a species that is found through out tropical and sub tropical Asia from India east to China and Indonesia.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Near Thretened (National Red List 2012).

This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

This is a rare breeding resident that is found through out the island. In the wet zone I have seen it mostly at the Bellanwila Attidiya, Kotte and Thalangama marshes. In the north I have seen it in the Jaffna peninsula, Mannar and at  Giants tank at Murunkan. It is known to occur in the highest hills as well.

This is a very secretive bird which is usually crepasculer in its behavior.

In Wilpattu I have seen it at Periya Villu and at Manikkapola Uttu.
