This is a perennial shrub of about 2 meters in height and is found only in Sri Lanka and India.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).

The leaves of this species are used in Ayurveda medicine to treat fractures, boils, eczema, food poisoning and asthma.

During the flowering season many species of nectar feeding butterflies can be observed on these flowers. Thousands of white flowers produced in unison have a magnetic effect on many species of butterflies including the rare Yellow Pansy butterfly. Many of them will be around the same bush throughout the day. This is a rare treat for anyone who is interested photographing these beautiful insects.

In Wilpattu I have observed the flowers of this species during the months of September to November.
