This is a migrant raptor, which is not very common. It breeds in southern Europe, North Africa, Asia, western South Africa and Namibia. They migrate during winter to sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. During the migrant season this small eagle can occur throughout the country.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as “Least Concerned” (IUCN Red List).

This species is protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

I have seen this species at many locations in the country from the highest hills to the arid islands off the cost of Jaffna. Some times they also occur over the city of Colombo.

This species is rarely seen in Wilpattu. I have seen it at Borupan Wila, Maha Wewa and Kaali Villu.
