This is a small flowering tree found in the dry lowlands. It is also native to India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).

Despite the status being least concerned many authors are of the opinion that this is an uncommon species in the country.

This is a small tree that produces striking golden yellow flowers with a sweet fragrance. The short branches give the tree a stunted appearance. The bark and leaves are used in traditional folk and siddha medicine to treat Bronchitis, Indigestion Inflammation, Diabetes Menstrual disorders and Cholera.

In Wilpattu I have observed these trees in bloom between June and August. These trees shed their leaves and produce reddish tender leaves prior to flowering.
