9th March 2014 at 4.18pm 1 Leopard at Nelum Wila. N 08.40277, E 079.98154
I spotted fresh pugmarks from Nelum Wila sand patch towards Nelum Wila and spotted the leopard walking ahead of the vehicle close to the culvert. It was a female. As I noticed that it was quite vary I followed it keeping a distance of about 50 meters. I only managed to get a few photos as the leopard turned back to look in my direction. As the leopard approached a bend an on coming vehicle resulted in it disappearing in to the forest. This is my first sighting of this shy animal and I named it Nelum Wila Female 1 (NWF 1)

The author visits Wilpattu National Park regularly and will update this website with his field notes and photographs of individual leopards as well as other species of fauna & flora observed in the park. His primary goal in launching this website is to create awareness among the general public of the fascinating bio diversity of the park and to highlight the importance of protecting it for generations to come. The author’s study of the leopards will be of importance for anyone who may be keen to identify the leopards they photograph in Wilpattu and learn more about them.
