This species is found in forested areas of the low country dry zone. It is found in the wild across much of South and Southeast Asia, Southern China and northern Australia. It has been introduced and is now naturalized in Florida and parts of Africa.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).

While the small fruit produced by this wild species is bitter and not edible a sub species of this vine Trichosanthes cucumerina anguina commonly referred to, as Snake Gourd is a very popular vegetable throughout its range, which is cultivated for its strikingly long fruit.

This fleshy vine with tendrils producing this delicate white flowers are usually found at shady locations in the park.
