This species is commonly found throughout South Asia. Other than Sri Lanka it is found in India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.  The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (IUCN Red List) and it is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

This species is widely distributed in the low country wet zone and dry zone up to an altitude of about 500 meters.

In most dry zone national parks such as Yala, Udawalawa and Wilpattu it is this species that is commonly found inside the park bungalow bathrooms.

Even though, when excited, they squirt urine in defense they are absolutely harmless animals and has the ability to leap quite a long distance.
