This is a very common breeding resident species found throughout the country except in the higher hills. This species is only found in Southern India and Sri Lanka.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).

This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

This species is found in urban areas including the city of Colombo and through out the low country dry zone home gardens and forests. However in the wet zone it avoids dense forests. The highest altitude at which I have seen this species so far has been in the Peak Wilderness at an altitude of 1862 meters. I have also noted that while most of these birds have a pale cap some individuals observed from Mannar up to Jaffna peninsula had caps with a brownish tinge.

This is a very common species in Wilpattu and can be seen throughout the park.
