This is a common migrant species that is considered a Eurasian wader. Five subspecies are recognized of which T.t. terrignotae which breeds in southern Manchuria and eastern China and T.t. eurhina which breeds in Tajikistan, north India and Tibet visit Sri Lanka.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (IUCN Red List) and it is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

The Common Red Shank is found mostly in the dry zone water bodies and costal mud flats around the country. It is a common species at most inland dry zone tank shores as well.

It is a regular visitor to Wilpattu and a few individuals can be seen at most of the water bodies during the migrant season.
