Ibba Wala, Boralu Wala between Humbas Wewa and Walas Wala.

First Sighting

2nd June 2012 at 3.25pm.

  • 14th July 2012 at 7.05am. We arrived at Boralu Wala between Humbas Wala and Walas Wala. N 8.407783, E 80.042783
    IWMC 1 was lying down at the center of the Wala. After about 10 minutes it got up, walked towards us, crossed the road in front of the vehicle and went on to the opening on the opposite side. It was quite relaxed and was not at all bothered by our presence. (With Nanda Senanayake and guide Saranga)

    Both IWMC 1 & IWFC 1 were resting under a bush in the center of the Wala close to each other. They were alerted by a "kreeeees, kreees" alarm call of a Toque Monkey coming from a tree to the right hand side of the Wala beyond the bund and hurriedly trotted into the forest. (With guide Saranga)
  • 16th June 2012 between 6.30-7.45am. I reached Ibba Wala and was scouting the area. N 8.395417, E 80.056267
    IWMC 1 walked down from the bund on the right, proceeded to the center of the open area and got on to the fallen log. It was on the log for one hour and 15 minutes. (With guide Saranga)

    Both IWMC 1 & IWFC 1 are at the same location where they were seen yesterday. Photographed both the leopards well. IWFC 1 moved out of sight with the arrival of the second vehicle. IWMC 1 was quite relaxed (as it was yesterday) and was on the earth mound for about 40 minutes. (With guide Saranga)

  • 3rd June 2012 at 6.15am. I arrived at Ibba Wala. N 8.395417, E 80.056267
    IWMC 1 & IWFC 1 were lying together on a small earth mound about 25 feet from the ground on the Ibba Wala side. IWFC 1 moved into the jungle upon the arrival of the vehicle. This was my first sighting of IWFC 1. IWMC 1 was quite relaxed. I photographed it well. (With Rajeev Jayawardena and guide Saranga)

  • 2nd June 2012 at 3.25pm. We arrived at Ibba Wala and saw IWMC 1 on the opposite side of Ibba Wala sleeping about 30 feet inside the jungle on the edge of a pit created by the removal of gravel for road building. N 8.396633, E 80.055900
    This was the first time that I saw this leopard. I estimated its age to be around 12 months.(With Gunasiri Jayawardena and guide Saranga.)
