There are 3,154 flowering plants (Angiosperms) as well as two species of seed plants (Gymnosperms) recognized in the country. Out of the flowering plants 894 are endemic to the island. The two species of Cycas found in the country, Madu Cycas nathorstii and Maha Madu Cycas zeylanica belong to seed plant species, of which Maha Madu is critically endangered. Madu is commonly seen at Wilpattu.
