This is a common breeding resident through out the country from the highest hills to the seashore. This tiny bird is native to southern Europe, Africa, southern Asia and Australia.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).
This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
I have seen this active little bird from Horton plains National park to the paddy fields and marshlands close to the sea. The zigzagging flight display of the males accompanies by their zitting chick chick calls during the breeding season is unique to this species.
In Wilpattu this species can be seen commonly at open fields such as Maha Wewa, Pallekandal, Pomparippu and Periya Villu.
