This is a regular but rare migrant to the lowlands. It is a summer migrant to Europe and Asia, and winters mainly in Africa.
The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (IUCN Red List) and it is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.
My first sighting of this species in Sri Lanka was on the 4th of February 2018 at kaali Villu in Wilpattu National Park. The bird was a non-hepatic juvenile. It was perched on the main stem of dead bush about 100 meters from the edge of the forest.
