This is a breeding resident found throughout the dry lowlands. They are less common in the wet lowlands. Other than in Sri Lanka they are found across the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia.

The conservation status of this species is regarded as Least Concerned (National Red List 2012).

This is a species protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as amended by Act No. 22 of 2009.

These birds live in large flocks and are usually detected due to their amazing hanging nests and continuous chattering. During the nesting period a colony will nest in one or a few close by trees. I have seen them throughout the dry zone and at a few locations such as Elpitiya and Homagama in the wet zone.

In Wilpattu I have come across nesting colonies during August and September and between November to December at Pomparippu, Mollikulama and at many locations bordering the park.
